A quick reference for evaluating research compound suppliers.
There's no enforced definition of "USA-made" in this industry. It can mean:
Both get the same label. Only one tells you where the compound actually came from.
Where is the API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) actually synthesized?
Not where the company is headquartered. Not where testing happens. Where the compound is built.
| Full US synthesis | Overseas synthesis, US finish | |
|---|---|---|
| Traceability | One facility, fully documented | Paper trail runs through a factory that reports its own results |
| Supply risk | Domestic supply chain | Exposed to export controls, customs holds, shipping delays |
| Quality control | Verifiable end-to-end | Depends on trusting an unverified overseas process |
Same label. Different product.
The US accounts for a minority of FDA-registered API manufacturing sites worldwide. Most production is concentrated in China and India. That's why the majority of "US" suppliers import raw API and handle only the last step domestically.
This isn't hypothetical. Between December 2025 and March 2026, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Cincinnati identified over 300 master-carton smuggling attempts concealing roughly 5,000 individual mislabeled compound shipments, including GLP-1 actives such as retatrutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide. A 99%+ HPLC purity result is useful, but it's one data point. It shows what that specific test can detect, not everything that could be present. Synthesis quality and testing rigor both matter. One doesn't substitute for the other.
Ask any supplier these questions. If they can't answer plainly, walk away.
01
Where is the compound synthesized? Not filled, not tested, but built from raw amino acids.
02
Is the synthesis facility ISO 9001:2015 certified and FDA registered?
03
Is sterile filling done in an ISO Class 5 cleanroom?
04
Which independent third-party lab tested this specific batch? Ask to see a COA tied to the lot number on the vial.
05
What is the purity threshold? Ask whether they publish HPLC and mass spec results.
